Gujarat Stree Kelavani Mandal, engaged in the field of higher education for women since the last nine decades is a big name in the history of education in Gujarat. ‘Gujarat Stree Kelavani Mandal’ was established in 1917 at the instance and inspiration of Mahatma Gandhiji. It was blessed by him, as it dedicated all its activities to his high ideals.
In the beginning, this institution was working as a branch of ‘GUJARAT KELAVANI MANDAL’. Sheth Shri Ambalal Sarabhai was the President and Shri Keshav Harshad Dhruv was the Vice President of the Managing Committee of the same. Shri Indulal Yagnik and learned Shri Ramnarayan Pathak worked as its Secretaries. This institution organised Educational Conferences at various places in Gujarat. It also established many National level Schools, Colleges, Technical/Industrial Schools, Urdu Schools, Health Centres and Physical Education Schools in rural areas of Gujarat. It also started libraries in different areas of Gujarat with the financial assistance of Srimant Gaekwad State of Baroda and also initiated activities for Women’s Education. After Gujarat Kelavani Mandal passed a resolution handing over all the activities other than Women’s Education to Gujarat Vidyapith, Gujarat Stree Kelavani Mandal, specifically expanded its activities regarding Women’s Education independently. Meanwhile in the year 1916 Maharshi Karve and Sir Vithaldas Thakersey established S.N.D.T. University, which was popularly known as Karve University.

GSKM obtained affiliation with this University for the purpose of higher education for women and started S.L.U. College for Women – Shri Lalshanker Umiyashanker College for Women in 1920-1921.
The main founder members of this institution were eminent citizens of Gujarat who initiated higher education for women by encouragement to their own families to take the first steps, such as Sir Ramanbhai Nilkanth, Lady Vidyagauri Nilkanth, Smt. Shardabahen Mehta, Dr. Sumant Mehta, Sir Manubhai Nandshanker Mehta, Diwan of Baroda State, Shri Indulal Yagnik, Shri Balvantrai Thakore, Shri Ramnarayan V. Pathak and others. Maharani Smt. Chimnabai Gaekwad of Vadodara was appointed as the first President of this institution.
